Safety measures initiated on the Delhi Gurgaon Expressway during the Kanwar Yatra
Post Date : July 29,2010
In anticipation of the huge number of Lord Shiva devotees who passed along the Delhi – Gurgaon Expressway for the Kanwar Yatra, several safety measures were put in place.
These initiatives were aimed at ensuring the safety of the Kanwariyas and the commuters on the expressway while limiting the disruption of traffic flow. A special pathway on the Delhi Gurgaon expressway was created for the Kanwariyas. This pathway was marked by using a large number of New Jersey concrete barriers to segregate it from the vehicular traffic. To further ensure that the Kanwariyas did not step into the main carriageway, a nylon rope was deployed all through the route and caution tapes were used in high risk areas. In addition, a total of over 250 caution sign boards were deployed for the benefit of the pilgrims.
A special rapid response team comprising specialized personnel and equipment was set up to ensure safety of commuters. Extensive patrolling was also done by the patrol teams during this crucial period.
Safety messages were continuously flashed on the VMS/PA systems installed at the main border plaza to advise both commuters and pedestrians. In addition, a dedicated emergency number for the Kanwar Yatra had been set up and was displayed throughout the route in both English and Hindi for any kind of assistance through the control room that was functional round the clock. All these measures were in place day and night on the expressway till 8th August, 2010.
