Post Date : Aug 03,2010

On Aug 03, 2010 DSC Limited announced connectivity of the Mahipalpur- Najafgarh Storm Water Drain Project commissioned by the PWD to prevent water logging at Indira Gandhi International Airport and neighboring villages.

The first phase of the project involved the construction of a 4 km long storm water tunnel drain  connecting Dwarka underpass near Indira Gandhi International Airport to Najafgarh drain. The second phase consisted of constructing a 7 kms long box drain along the periphery of the airport from Mahipalpur upto Rewari railway line. This important project makes the IGI airport complex safe from the fear of unexpected water-logging that could result in disruption in air services.

Built with an investment of Rs. 135 crores, this project commissioned by the PWD, will prevent water logging at the Indira Gandhi International Airport and neighbouring villages.

DSC Limited, one of the fastest growing infrastructure companies in India today announced the connectivity of the Mahipalpur- Najafgarh Drain Project (MNDP). This connectivity ensures that the accumulated storm water at the Indira Gandhi International Airport will be drained off to the Najafgarh Drain. The project is of strategic importance as it ensures that the airport complex is safe from unexpected water-logging that could lead to disruption of air services.

This project has been built with a combination of state-of-the-art technologies at a cost of Rs 135 crores. These include Cut and Cover, Pipe Pushing, Box Pushing and Laser Guided Tunnelling technologies. The special Box Pushing Technology has been used under the Rewari Railway track without causing stoppage of train traffic on the route. The Drain has been constructed around an area of 5,000 acres to ensure smooth flow of rain water from the IGI airport to the Najafgarh drain. This project is being completed in two phases. The first phase of the project was completed in December 2009, involving a 4 km long storm water tunnel drain connecting Dwarka underpass near Indira Gandhi International Airport to Najafgarh drain. The phase II of the project involves a 7-km-long box drain connecting Mahipalpur along the periphery of the airport upto the Rewari railway line.

Speaking on the occasion, K K Mutreja, Project Head-MNDP, DSC Limited, said “We are happy to announce the readiness of the Mahipalpur Najafgarh Drain project to drain the storm water from the IGI Airport to the Najafgarh Drain and we will be handing over this project shortly to government. This is a crucial project and will act as a backbone in the overall infrastructure of the IGI Airport and surrounding areas. We have used “cut and cover” method to build this drain; it will allow the top surface of the drain to be used as a service road to serve the integrated freight complex along with other facilities planned in the area. The project will go a long way in ensuring the smooth operation of the newly developed third runway at the Delhi airport”.

The construction of the drain will also bring relief to the three surrounding villages from frequent water logging. It is expected to carry a discharge of 700 cusecs from the three villages (Mahipalpur, Rangpuri, and Samalkha), 1300 cusecs from IGI Airport and 400 cusecs from Dwarka to Najafgarh drain. This project is crucial for the expansion of the IGI Airport under which a third runway was recently constructed. This will also improve the quality of life of the residents living in surrounding villages who live under constant fear of water logging during the monsoons.
