Post Date : Oct 11,2010

A DSC initiative to promote South Asian Literature at a global platform
Creating a dynamic spotlight for South Asian Literature at an international forum, DSC Limited announced the launch of the DSC South Asian Literature Festival in Britain. With more than thirty events confirmed at an eclectic mix of venues across the country from 16-31 October, the DSC South Asian Literature Festival is Britain’s first major event celebrating the rich and varied cultures of the South Asian region, through the world of literature.  The Shortlist for the prestigious USD 50,000 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature is also scheduled to be announced during this literary celebration, as a part of a special event on October 25, 2010.
Speaking about the Festival Mr. Manhad Narula, Director DSC Limited said, ‘The DSC South Asian Literature Festival is a seamless extension of our vision to promote South Asian literature at a global forum. Literature emanating from this region is gaining immense readership right across the globe and this is especially true in the UK where it is followed with a keen interest. What this festival does so uniquely is that it presents the literary and cultural traditions of the South Asian region in an imaginative and interactive way, through interesting forums and reaches out to the public at large across the country.’
Festival co-directors Jon Slack and Bhavit Mehta said: ‘The thriving literary and publishing scene in South Asia was the impetus for us bringing a literary festival devoted to South Asian writing to the UK. The sheer scale of imagination and stories connected with South Asia is truly immense, and to play a role in bringing these stories to the public is very inspiring for us. Our programme is a strong mix of high-profile literary writers and top names from politics, academia and broadcasting that people will be familiar with, but we’re also deeply committed to supporting new and emerging talent. We wanted to reflect the diverse nature of South Asian culture, exploring the politics, languages and literature of the region – we hope there will be something for everyone.’
India’s biggest selling paperback writer and recently voted one of Time magazine’s top 100 most influential people in the world, Chetan Bhagat, alongside prize-winning novelists Romesh Gunesekera and Amit Chaudhuri, historian Michael Wood, from two great political dynasties, Fatima Bhutto and Nayantara Sahgal and well-known broadcasters Mihir Bose, Hardeep Singh Kohli and George Alagiah will headline the inaugural DSC South Asian Literature Festival.
The various events in London will take place at an eclectic mix of venues between 15-25 October 2010, including the British Library, British Museum, Rich Mix in Bethnal Green, Free Word Centre in Farringdon, ‘Q Books’ in Soho. The events in the rest of UK are scheduled to take place at central libraries of Brighton, Oxford, Leicester, and Sheffield between 26-31 October.
The DSC South Asian Literature Festival is being launched in light of increasing international attention on the region. Highlighting the best of regional literature, these events are bound to foster renewed interest in South Asian writing.
